ON MY DEEN was written about and with Philadelphia’s Black Muslim Community.

West Philly. Spring 1962. Faye Ann has just joined the Nation of Islam, setting her life on a whole new path. Her best friend, Michael, would like to be a lot more than friends, but the two can’t seem to agree on religion, politics, or even what makes a good pie. Over the passing decades, personal circumstances and cultural upheavals bring Faye Ann and Michael together as much as they keep them apart. Can these would-be lovers find each other while seeking their own paths to peace?

ABOUT THE CREATORS

Erin Courtney (Book) is a New York based playwright. Her play, A Map of Virtue, was awarded an Obie and was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding New York Theater. Her play I Will Be Gone, premiered at the Humana Festival, Actors Theater of Louisville. She has written two operas with Elizabeth Swados: The Nomad and Kaspar Hauser, both commissioned and produced by The Flea Theater. Her other plays, produced by Clubbed Thumb, include Alice the Magnet, directed by Pam MacKinnon, and Demon Baby, directed by Ken Rus Schmoll. She is an affiliated artist with Clubbed Thumb, a member of the Obie Award winning playwrights collective, 13P, as well as the co-founder of the Brooklyn Writers Space.

Max Vernon (Book, Music, Lyrics & Orchestrations) is a musical theatre writer, whose works include The View UpStairs, KPOP (opening on Broadway this November!), The Tattooed Lady, and Show & Tell. They are a three-time Drama Desk nominee, Out100 Honoree, two-time MacDowell Fellow, Dramatist Guild Fellow, and recipient of the Lucille Lortel Award, Richard Rodgers Award, Jonathan Larson Grant, Pew Arts and Culture Grant, and New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship, among others. They have also written work for Audible, Disney, Virgin Group, and Tyra Banks. Notable concerts include Joe’s Pub, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. With over 25 years of arts experience both front and back of house, Darnelle has assumed the role of Actor, Stage Manager, Playwright, Director, Producer, House Manager, Box Office Manager, Teaching Artist, Marketing Director, Barrymore Voter and Producing Artistic Director. He wrote his first play, “Sidewalk Cafe” in 1999. He later moved to Philadelphia where in 2004, founded Represented Theatre Company and began planning for Rep Radio, which launched in 2009. Well-rounded in Arts and Culture, Darnelle has worked for The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Historic Philadelphia, Inc., Keen Company, The College of Physicians of Philadelphia and, Philadelphia Department of Public Health. Darnelle is currently the Director of Operations at Theatre Exile. He studied Video Production and Multimedia and Web Design at the Art institute of Philadelphia and Arts Administration at New York University where he co-founded Just Learn Something, which promotes “The Business of Broadway” written by Mitch Weiss and Perri Gaffney and The Business of Theater, A Working Title. Darnelle is also a member of “THE FARM - NYC”, a play development operation, “We Grow Theater”
