Four men of color pull up to a mic and talk diversity, inclusion and race in the Philadelphia Theatre Community. While this is not a complete reflection of our cultural makeup, these voices paint a picture that may not be as clear to all but, are views through a lens that is worth a look. This, I hope, will be the start of many conversations that bring to light the extremely complex mission of a great cultural community as change is demanded and the conversation continues. So, I am pretty organized. To a point that I prefer to do only one interview a day. I want to make sure that if anything comes up, I have more than enough time to adjust to any changes. So, I scheduled this interview with Dito van Riegersberg about 1812’s production of Buyer & Cellar. I only knew about the play because my time in NYC would include passing the theatre this production was in on many occasions. A one-person show was so engaging that it was sold out most nights and continued to be extended.

ABOUT ALMANAC DANCE CIRCUS THEATRE

Called “The little dance theatre troupe that could” by Philadelphia's City Paper, Almanac was founded in 2013 by Nick Gillette and Ben Grinberg, graduates of the Pig Iron School for Advanced Performance Training, with Adam Kerbel, a graduate of the Headlong Performance Institute. The company pursues present performance at the edge of what is possible, through playful honesty.

Since its founding, Almanac has performed for tens of thousands across eleven states and in Mexico, from street fairs to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, elementary school assemblies to private parties and events. They were selected as 2013-2014 Fresh Tracks Artists at New York Live Arts, were the first resident company at the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, and are artists-in-residence at Mascher Space Co-Op.
