THE BUSINESS OF BROADWAY
December 2021
Chapter 5 (Promotion) and Chapter 9 (How to Sell a Flop)
(Forbes) “The disparity [on Broadway] now is heightened, according to those in the trenches. The big hits are bigger, but the smaller shows - mostly plays - are even harder to sell, especially if they’re brand new. The anecdata says not all Broadway shows are the same, and buyers are more discerning about how they emerge from their pandemic shells. … Several producers who have been waiting to launch new plays have decided to hold off even longer, aiming for the fall of 2022 rather than the spring."
Chapter 17: Authors
Stephen Sondheim passed away at the age of 91 the day after Thanksgiving, just as a revival of his “Company” and the revamped film of “West Side Story” are due to open in December. Sondheim is considered the greatest Broadway composer/lyricist of his generation.
